About Gullah Geechee Visitors Center
GULLAH-GEECHEE VISITORS' CENTER – Welcome to Beaufort!
You must stop at Ly Bensons’ Gallery and Studio out in Frogmore in the Beaufort Sea Islands. You will be impressed with the many fine paintings, sweetgrass baskets and historical pieces displayed throughout the gallery. The proprietor, Rev. Kenneth Hodges, is very helpful and will allow you to browse the gallery on your own sweet time, because there is so much to see and learn!
He has one room which has been dedicated to Robert Smalls, a former slave who became a hero during the Civil War and later became both a state legislator and a multi-term U.S. Senator.
Rev. Hodges is so willing to teach visitors to understand the incredible history of Beaufort’s Civil War and about the Gullah and Geechee people (the decendents of the slaves) who still live in the Sea Islands. You must plan to shop here. He has beautiful Arfrican and African-American works of art… this place is truly fascinating.
