Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, sit astride the Piscataqua River as it empties into the Gulf of Maine. Both cities date to the 17th century, when Kittery began crafting a reputation as a boat-building center and Portsmouth was the preeminent trading post in northern New England. Today, Portsmouth is known for its historic, brick-and-slate downtown and its walkable downtown, while Kittery is best-known for the Kittery Factory Outlets, and the ship-building tradition continues at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the oldest continuously operating shipyard in the United States Navy.
