Exploring Southern Middle

Southern Middle, Tennessee, refers to a region that’s exactly what it sounds like: the southern middle portion of the state. Hovering right around Tennessee’s southern border, this region is south of Nashville, east of Memphis and west of Chattanooga, meaning it doesn’t get quite as much attention as some of its neighbors. However, if you haven’t explored this southern spot, you’re missing out.

Here are three top things to do the next time you’re in the area, so you can see what all the fuss is about.

Take in the Local Arts, Culture and History

What better way to learn about a new destination than by seeing what exactly makes it tick? In Southern Middle, you can soak in the area arts, culture and history in a variety of ways. Visit Camp Blount Historic Site to walk in the footsteps of soldiers called to action during the War of 1812. Plans are underway to offer camping at the park, but you can currently walk the trails on the site. Catch a show at the South Jackson Performing Arts Center, where there’s always something fun on deck, from community theater to musicals to comedy sets. Not far away, the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center offers art sales, exhibitions and even arts-related classes.

Grab a Drink

There are loads of spots to grab a drink in this region of Tennessee, most notably and famously, the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. But don’t just stick to the world-famous tried-and-true distillers, brewers and vintners. Check out the regional favorites, too. Prichard’s Distillery crafts Tennessee whiskey and rum and offers distillery tours every day of the week. American Craft Distillers and Lynchburg Winery together offer something for everyone in your traveling crew, whether they prefer whiskey, rum, vodka, moonshine or wine. Beans Creek Winery likewise crafts award-winning wines from local grapes, with tastings offered daily. Prefer a good brew over all else? Grab a beer at Ole Shed Brewing Company.

Enjoy Some Thrills

If you’re ready to get your blood pumping and the adrenaline flowing, there are multiple ways to do so. Skydive Tennessee at Tullahoma Regional Airport gives you the inimitable thrill of a 60-second free fall as you jump from the plane attached to a USPA-certified tandem jumping master. If you’d rather get your fun on the water than in the sky, you can do so thanks to Lake Hop, which pairs you with local captains so they can do all the driving and hard work, and you can do all the fun stuff, like wake surfing, bass fishing and living the boating good life.
