Grabbing a Bite in the Berkshires

In Western Massachusetts, the Berkshires await as an outdoor playground and a luxury getaway for those hoping to relax just a short trip from some of the East Coast’s busier urban hubs. Here, you’ll find lots to see and do, from ski areas to museums, theaters to galleries, but also wonderful inns and boutique hotels to act as your base camp during your explorations of the region, as well as amazing restaurants to keep you fed.

For the best local bites during your Berkshires stay, you’ll want to be sure to add some of these top spots to eat in the Berkshires to your itinerary.

1. Mezze Bistro & Bar

With a Food Network-approved chef at the helm, you’ll know that you’re in good hands at Mezze Bistro & Bar, in Williamstown. There, the restaurant offers prix fixe menus that change with the season and what ingredients are available on any given day. You get three courses, with a salad or soup to start (think a chilled beet soup with salmon tartare or a bitter green salad with an oregano vinaigrette), then an entrée like herb-roasted chicken or pasta Bolognese, and finally a gorgeous dessert, like lemon olive oil cake with strawberry sauce and ice cream, or vegan chocolate cherry ice cream.

2. Berkshire Mountain Bakery

Another restaurant that has some TV credits to its name, this bakery doesn’t just do pastries and bread (though you’ll definitely want to try those, too). The menu also offers pizza, salads, sandwiches and more.

3. Pleasant & Main Café and General Store

For a cozy, comfortable environment and rib-sticking eats you’ll be hard pressed to find just anywhere, visit this café and general store in Housatonic. Omelets and quiche reign on the breakfast menu, while lunchtime brings savory and sweet crepes.

4. Marjoram & Roux

This cute spot offers fresh, simple eats that incorporate local ingredients. Try the Barrington Bagel, with smoked salmon, red onion, dill and caper cream cheese; a pear, brie and fig jam sandwich; or a prosciutto baguette topped with arugula, tapenade and mozzarella.

5. Steam

Craving noodles? Stop by Steam, in Great Barrington. There, you’ll be treated to fragrant and warming noodle-based dishes like miso ramen and spicy beef Szechuan noodles. Beyond the noodles, there are also options like steamed buns and banh mi.

6. No. 10

Make sure to make your reservations and then grab dinner at this steakhouse that sets itself apart with its high-end, high-quality ingredients. Start off with duck liver pate or roasted bone marrow, before moving on to a ribeye or porterhouse with sides of truffle fries, sautéed mushrooms or mac ‘n cheese.

7. Morgan House Inn & Restaurant

Built in 1813, this historic home now houses a restaurant that serves up a wide array of both casual and more elegant fare, whether you’re in the mood for a roasted duck or just a burger. House favorites and specialties range from the fish and chips to the turkey dinner to the smoked brisket sandwiches.
