Local’s Corner: Block Island, RI Best Kept Secrets

Hi everyone! It’s time for another edition of The Local’s Corner.

Most Discovery Map franchise owners live and work in their map territories. The ones that do not spend significant time in those territories (think vacation home, seasonal visits). As a result, they’re experts in all things local.

We asked Amy Newman from Discovery Map of Block Island about some of her favorite local spots. Read on for an informed local’s perspective!

What are the best kept secrets and things to do off the beaten path?

I recommend biking to either the Southeast Lighthouse or the North Lighthouse. You’ll feel like you are at the end of the earth, with beautiful panoramic views of the Atlantic and Rhode Island coast lines. Hiking down to Mohegan bluffs (steep but worth it) to hang on the beach or check out the wind farm is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Other fun activities include paddle-boarding in New Harbor and having a cocktail on the front porch of the National Hotel. Check out the historical society museum and shop; they offer exhibits as well as island tours. ,

Where is the best breakfast/brunch?

Head to Ernie’s for traditional sit-down breakfast close to the ferry; Aldo’s Bakery for amazing breakfast pastries, waffles, egg platters; and Old Post Office Bagel Shop for a bagel sandwich.

What are the best places to hear music?

Captain Nick’s is one of the hottest bars on Block Island and the best for live music; Yellow Kittens for live music and a huge dance floor; and Ballard’s has live bands daily in their outdoor beachfront bar.

What is the history of this place and what historic sites can I see?

Originally a Native American settlement, it was explored by the Dutch and renamed after the explorer Adrian Block. Settler’s Rock is still there at the North End of the island. Be sure to check the lighthouses at each end of the island, as well as the Manisses monument and Indian cemetery.

What makes this place special?

Being on Block Island, even for just a day, is like a mini vacation. Here you are definitely on island time as you gaze out to the ocean from mostly everywhere on the island. It is truly relaxing and full of natural beauty.

Any other Recommendations for your area?

Be sure to enjoy the great shops and restaurants that are all over Old Harbor and New Harbor. I highly recommend enjoying a cocktail as you sit on the Adirondack chairs on the lawn of the Spring House Hotel and gaze out at the ocean.
